About
Study of the immune system in the gut, more in particular the Peyer's patches and the epithelium covering Peyer's patches, the follicle-associated epithelium (FAE).
FAE is the site where the first lesions in Crohn's disease (CD), a chronic inflammatory disease of the bowel, are found. Smokers have a higher risk for developing CD, but the role of cigarette smoke in the pathogenesis of CD is poorly understood. A better understanding of the influence of smoke on the immune system of the gut will help us to understand why smokers are more vulnerable to develop CD.
