La prima sezione dell'elaborato offre l'analisi accurata delle principali allocuzioni con cui la Chiesa, per volere di Giovanni Paolo II, nel 1992 tentò di riabilitare l'immagine di Galileo Galilei a distanza di poco più di tre secoli dalla condanna del 22 giugno 1633.
Nelle altre due sezioni, invece, vengono presi in esame alcuni concetti fondamentali che aiutano a comprendere la legittimità storica o meno di alcune delle tesi sostenute dal cardinale Poupard e da Giovani Paolo II.

This thesis offers a contribution to the scientific field of the Pseudo-Clementines, a unique, early Christian novel (3rd-4th century), delivered in several versions. This contribution focuses on the Greek version of that novel, called the Homilies, and more specifically, on a much discussed part of those Homilies, namely the Apiondisputationen. The relevant passage in which the main character Clemens enters into discussion with the pagan Appion, shows us how those characters claim truth and argue about the true culture, philosophy, education, etc. This passage is all too often considered as ‘separate’ and ‘strange’ in the investigation into sources of the Pseudo-Clementines, making it underexposed territory in rhetorical and narrative, literary research, but also in philosophical research. This contribution wants to fill that gap. It offers a rhetorical and narrative analysis of the Apiondisputationen including some philosophical insights and some notions of the dynamics of fictionalization. In addition to that analysis, I consider this study as a building block for the overall reading experience and the total understanding of the Pseudo-Clementine Homilies.

The broad aim of this research unit is to clarify the religion, history, and sociology of the ancient groups traditionally called, collectively, “Jewish Christianity,” but increasingly “Christian” or “Jesus-believing Judaism.” The group also seeks to clarify the issues involved in conceptualizing such groups as a distinct category of religion in antiquity.

Onder ‘Gnosticisme’ verstaat men doorgaans een zeer gevarieerde, heterogene religieuze beweging uit de eerste eeuwen van onze jaartelling. Deze bestond uit verschillende leraren, leerstellingen, groeperingen die stelden dat ze een zekere vorm van ‘gnosis’ of ‘kennis’ bezaten. Die kennis betrof de oorsprong van de wereld, doel van het leven op aarde en de wijze waarop een mens de geestelijke verlossing kan bereiken. Deze gnostische stromingen en leraren kenden hun invloed in de latere Middeleeuwen tot zelfs op de dag van vandaag. Dit is onder meer te merken in de bekende legende van dokter Faust en de wetenschappelijke gevolgen van de ontdekking van een groot aantal gnostische geschriften in Nag Hammadi in 1945 die het beeld op het ontstaan van het christendom sterk nuanceerde. In deze lezing zal Benjamin De Vos ingaan op wat Gnosticisme of algemeen gezegd: ‘het gnostische gedachtegoed’ nu precies inhoudt. Hij zal daarbij aandacht schenken aan de problematiek binnen het wetenschappelijk onderzoeksveld en onder welke gedaante(s) dit Gnosticisme onze tijd bereikt en/of beïnvloed heeft.
